Volunteer Emergency Medical Service was established in 1977. In 2004 it
was incorporated with the Wolfforth Volunteer Fire Department but
remained an all-volunteer service. Due to the growth in the area and the
demand on the service, it became a paid, full-time service October 1st
2006. Since, the service comprised of 36 members spanning all
levels of certification, we operate under the South Plains Emergency
Medical Services (SPEMS) system and our front-line ambulance and medical
supplies are supplied by Hazmat The purpose of the South Plains Regional Hazardous Materials Team is to respond to hazardous materials releases with available equipment and training to protect life and the environment from damage. This team covers the 15 county SPAG (South Plains Association of Governments) region located in the panhandle of Texas. Members of the team consist of HAZMAT Technicians and Operations level personnel from Wolfforth, Lubbock and communities in the region. All members are trained to directly intervene at the scene of a release for rescue of contaminated individuals and to contain or otherwise control the negative effects of the release. The South Plains Regional Response Hazardous Materials response vehicle is staffed primarily and maintained by the personnel of the Wolfforth Fire and EMS. Grant funding has allowed this vehicle to be purchased and equipped with environmental monitoring equipment, mitigation materials, chemical protective clothing, and research materials and equipment. The vehicle also contains an ACUT communication device which allows the linking of communications around the region further promoting interoperability. Along with emergency response the team provides Hazardous Materials training and provides information and tactics to area departments when a response from the team is not essential to the effective management of the incident.
