Fall (night) Fire Academy

The Wolfforth Basic Fire Academy is designed for individuals interested in pursuing a career as a certified firefighter. The curriculum includes a combination of class lectures, skills and field training. These classes are held on Monday Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 6PM to 10PM. In addition, class is scheduled on Saturdays from 8AM to 5PM. The academy lasts 5 1/2 months. All classes will be held in Wolfforth, unless other arrangements have been made to meet at the Lubbock Fire Department training academy for that class. This program is approved by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. The instruction and competencies for the following courses are integrated into the sequence provided in the curriculum for the Basic Structural Firefighter. This training curriculum exceeds minimum hour requirements set forth by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. Different fire service instructors will teach 30 fire service subjects. Students will receive 27 periodic exams and must maintain an overall average of 70% to successfully complete the course. In addition, a midterm and comprehensive final exam will be given and students must score at least a 70% on each exam to complete the course. Seven performance exams will also be administered during the academy and students must successfully complete all seven skills. Upon successful completion of the academy, students will be eligible to take a written exam and skills evaluation administered by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. All course work must be complete and the certificate of completion issued before applying for the state examination. Upon successful completion of the state exam students will be considered by the state to be certifiable upon completion of medical training. This medical training component is not included in this academy and must be obtained by the student. Student cannot receive a certification as a Basic Firefighter until this is completed.

The cost of the fall academy will be approx $3,000.

Academy Application Process

Applications will be available at Wolfforth City Hall and online starting the first Monday in May and are due back by the last Friday in May. The application process is important because if an applicant should tie with another applicant on the entrance exam the time that the application was turned in will be used to break the tie. The entrance exam will be given the second Saturday in June. The test site will be posted after the application deadline. Prospective candidates will be contacted between the time applications are due and orientation night to schedule an entrance exam. A student who fails to meet the standards outlined in the applicant's counseling data packet will be refused admission to the academy. The orientation night will be second Tuesday in July at the Wolfforth Fire and EMS station. The academy will begin first Monday in August.
